Ask, pause, explore.
1. Create a Thinking Culture
Be comfortable with silence after asking a question. Don’t feel awkward. Students are processing, rehearsing, or building confidence.
Say the expectation aloud: “Everyone is thinking. Everyone is ready. No hands up.”
Ask a question, then pause. Don’t rush. Let thinking happen.
2. Use “No Hands Up” to Maximise Inclusion
Avoid calling on the first student with a hand up, this excludes others who think more slowly or are unsure.
“No hands up” keeps everyone engaged and accountable for thinking.
Come back to students who have struggled. Give them a chance to shine later in the lesson.
3. Build a No Opt-Out Culture
“I don’t know” is often an easy escape, not a true lack of knowledge.
Say: “OK, let me say that again” then rephrase, clarify, give them a way in.
Still no answer? Don’t move on ,show the class that you don’t give up.
Use scaffolding:
Rephrase → Add detail → Give options → Break it down → Celebrate success.
“Is it an adjective or a noun?”
“Does it mean this or that? “
“Is it feminine or masculine?”
In the end, the student provides the correct answer and you can praise them. Whereas if you let them say “I don’t know” and move on, you exclude them and leave them feeling inadequate. When you keep going, you create a culture that say” We bother in this classroom”.
4. Show Relentless Belief
Tell a student: “I won’t give up on you. You’ll get there.” “There’s no opt out in my classroom, everyone makes a positive contribution “
This sends a powerful message to all students about your expectations and support.
If a student fails publicly, they may disengage or act out. Avoid this by sticking with them kindly but firmly. They’re in a pit, they have to get out by themselves but you are at the top offering a hand to help them get started.
5. Use Subtle Strategies for Anxious Learners
Walk around the room and quietly say: “I’ll ask you next, get ready.”
Use silent signals (eye contact, gestures) for students who want to be chosen without the pressure.
Build trust with quiet students by preparing them for success.
