The power of rest

Rest isn’t just for the weekend, it’s a mindset!

When we give ourselves permission to do nothing, we make room for everything else.

A clear mind is a more creative, focused, and energized teacher. Take a break now, allow yourself to disappear and empty your mind from teaching matters and trust that it will be there when you are ready to reconnect.
You will not forget how to teach, how to think about teaching, how to manage a class or deliver a lesson. (Despite what pre- September nightmares and weird dreams may suggest!)

Practicing mindfulness or even simply allowing time for “mind-wandering” has been linked to improved clarity and focus. This is especially important for teachers, whose days are filled with multitasking. Giving your brain space to “wander” can sharpen attention and decision-making abilities. (Killingsworth & Gilbert, 2010) It’s a critical component of long-term career sustainability, particularly in high-stress professions like teaching. (Maslach & Leiter, 2016)

So this summer, go and get bored! Find yourself a spot and no distractions, empty your mind, empty your thoughts, it’s not boring and useless, you’re doing yourself and your mind a favour! Especially if you have children at home.

Take a break, don’t fill your time with distractions and fillers every minute of your day! Give yourself permission to be still. Boredom is the birthplace of creativity!
