Writing Essays on La Haine: Developing Structure, Analysis and Exam Skills (Part 2)
This practical workshop is designed to support A-level French teachers in guiding students towards writing clear, structured and analytical essays on La Haine. Delivered in French and English, the session draws on extensive classroom experience to demystify the essay-writing process and provide effective, ready-to-use strategies.

Teaching La Haine: Structure, Analysis and Insight (Part 1)
This session is designed for teachers of A-level French who wish to develop or refresh their knowledge and understanding of the film La Haine. Drawing on over 15 years of classroom experience, the workshop offers a structured and practical framework to introduce, teach and analyse the film with confidence.
Delivered in French, this session will guide participants through key contextual knowledge, thematic exploration and cinematic techniques, while deepening understanding of Mathieu Kassovitz’s intentions and the film’s lasting impact.
Participants will explore effective ways to present the film to students, build analytical skills, and support learners in developing sophisticated responses. The session can also be used with A-Level students as part of retrieval and interleaving practice, to present, consolidate or revise key aspects of the film.
Suitable for both new and experienced teachers, this workshop aims to enrich subject knowledge, promote deep analysis and provide a structure to introduce the film.

Objectives of this resource:
Can be used in many different ways.
Quick visual retrieval of key aspects of the film La haine by Mathieu Kassovitz.
-Displayed on board, students scan the key words and with a partner, summarise each aspect in 2 sentences. They can each say one sentence so they get exposed to another perspective and recap more things.
-Students can be challenged to talk about the film for 1 minute non stop using as many aspects (as prompts) as they can.
-Students can challenge each other. Using the grid as prompts, one student select one keyword and challenge the other to describe in 2 sentences.
-Guessing game: Secretely select a key aspect, describe to your partner without using the keywords. Partner has to guess which key aspect you are talking about.
