Tiken Jah Fakoly is an Ivorian reggae singer known for his politically engaged music and his strong advocacy for social justice, African unity, and human rights. Born in Côte d’Ivoire in 1968, he has become one of the most influential voices in Francophone African music. His songs often criticise political corruption, economic inequality, and the impact of globalisation on African countries. Through reggae rhythms and direct, accessible lyrics, he encourages political awareness and collective responsibility.
"Ouvrez les frontières" reflects his long-standing commitment to defending the rights of migrants and highlighting inequalities between Africa and Europe. The song addresses themes of migration, opportunity, exploitation, and global justice.
This worksheet is designed for Year 13 A-Level French students (AQA / Edexcel) and supports the study of:
Immigration and integration
Political and social engagement
Globalisation and inequality
Francophone culture beyond metropolitan France
The activities develop key examination skills required for Paper 1 (Listening & Reading), Paper 2 (Writing), and Paper 3 (Speaking), including:
Detailed textual analysis
Translation into and from French
Manipulation of complex grammar (subjunctive, imperative, present tense nuance)
Development of structured debate and argumentative skills
The resource is fully editable and can be adapted for differentiation, homework tasks, cover work or assessment preparation.
A set of 12 sentences (Editable) to use from the start of year 12 to improve confidence, communication and fluency, narrow the gap between students (Especially with bilingual students)
The sentences provide a framework for speaking and writing.
Cut them out, keep them in a little envelope and use them in every lesson to create automatic behaviour.
The sentences provide model sentences to structure ideas at A-level. They are a great starting point and can encourage students to go and find their own sentences.
In a lesson: Lay out all the sentences in front of you. Have a bank of questions or statements on the topic you are studying and also from previous topics. Students work in pairs and take turn to answer questions or explain whether they agree if the statements or not. Meanwhile, they scan their phrases to structure their ideas and bounce back with developments. Each time they use a sentence, they turn over the slip and carry on. The first player to use all the phrases wins!
